Overview of Project

The overview outcome is for the student to explore painting techniques and color mixing while collaborating to create the backdrop for the class solar system play.

Essential Question(s)

Explore color mixing, primary and secondary colors. What is a primary and secondary color? How do colors mix to make new colors? How can color be applied to express different textures and the techniques? How can a paintbrush be used to create different techniques of the brush strokes? How can we work together to accomplish a large task?

Prior Knowledge

They will have prior learned about the solar system and all the planets

Timeline

Get there early to set up the black sheet in the hallway/ tape down- use a table if you have one Lay down a drop cloth and tape on all four corners Put paint on Styrofoam plates colors as red, blue and yellow, water buckets, paper towels, creating the stations for them to work in Have some painting colors ready to mix for the star-stenciling project in the other room Class- Teach the students about primary and secondary colors and how to mix them

Examples of Student or Artist Work

I will show them a presentation board of painting and color theory Example on a little sheet of what they are doing, show the demo

Assessment

Have the kids practice on a sheet of paper to play around with painting Then they will paint on the backdrop sheet

Materials

Black sheet from target- king size to paint for the backdrop Acrylic paint, blue, white, red, yellow Plates Containers for the water Water bucket 22 brushes Plastic drop cloth sheet and masking tape Plastic bucket with water to clean up brushes 18 star stencils, which are cut out stars from sponges 3 star cookie cutters Paper towels Clothespins for the sponges Star paper to practice the painting techniques while they wait to paint on the backdrop Presentation board and demo

Teacher Vocabulary

Primary and Secondary colors, color wheel, and then the solar system they were working on.

Procedures

Make sure to prepare the paints and plastic to keep it a clean project.

Teacher Reflection

If students get messy with the paint, keeping the classroom focused on the project? You can make this a two day teaching instead of one, which would be having them just paint the star cut out boards and practice mixing colors. Then on day two paint on the backdrop sheet. But, having them on the same day works if you have two teachers to monitor each section of students.

Feedback Activities

Skills Development

Will show through their experimenting with mixing colors.

Key Knowledge and Applications

Focusing Attention

Learning Activities

Step by step Get the classroom ready to go in the morning demo in room, small painting in room, large painting in the hall Introduce the project/ with presentation board and examples Have studentís role up sleaves---this paint will not come off of clothes. Do kids have smocks or old t-shirts to wear? Have the students practice color and painting techniques will they do this at their desks? With a stencil? Will the make a hue circle? Organize the classroom in three groups to paint the backdrop If I am there I can help with thisÖ. I need to know what time. Will they paint in three separate groups at separate times? Have them paint and talk about the solar system
