The Students were exposed to one of the initial important stages of understanding black and white photography. Pinhole photography/Camera Obscura, as a very basic approach to the silver process, can be aesthetically interesting in a unique way, phenomenal. This type of interest will encourage students to further learn how photography works, and how it all started with the Camera Obscura. I showed them a video of the Camera Obscura http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuJ_Jd6Qgyo. They learned about Abelardo Morell, and other well known photographers who utilize the pinhole.
Overview of Project
This project started on Friday March twelfth. I created a handout for students about making a pinhole camera. NancyÕs supplies were enough for the project, with the exception of photo paper. On Friday, each student completed their camera, and watched the video on the Camera Obscura. On the following monday Monday and Tuesday the Students had the day to shoot the photographs with the assistance of Myself. Then on Wednesday, the students learned how to make a positive of their negatives, and Friday the Project was due for critique.
Essential Question(s)
Can you understand how the basic concept of photography works? Where will you photograph? Can you turn a composition that you find interesting, into something greater than its immediate value?
Prior Knowledge
They needed to know how to make a well exposed print, through understanding the darkroom process of silver paper. The students also needed to understand how to make a well thought out composition.
Timeline
The First presentation was on March 12th, I introduced the idea of the pinhole camera and had the students create one. Then on Monday the Students learned more about how the pinhole applies to the history of photography. Then on tuesday and thursday, they made their prints. On thursday I taught them how to make a positive from their negative. Then on friday they had their critique.
Examples of Student or Artist Work
I will show some photographs that I have made using pinhole photography that explore the process deeper. I will be showing Abelardo MorellÕs work, as well as some other pinhole experts.
Assessment
We had a critique on that Friday, in which the students had to present their work and show it to the class. Well printed negatives were vital at that point.
Materials
The students needed silver paper, an oatmeal canister, black tape, a rubber band, black photo paper, black paint, a exact-o knife, scissors, a pop can, a number 7 needle, and some good weather.
Teacher Vocabulary
Camera Obscura. Pinhole, Aperture, Focal Range, and clarity.
Procedures
1. Create a powerpoint introducing how to make a pinhole camera, show it to the students, and then make it. 2. Teach the students about the history of the camera, be sure to make sure they understand how the Camera Obscura works. 3. Teach them how to shoot with the pinhole. 4. Let them make the photographs, and provide advice for them. 5. Show them how to create a negative from their positive. 6. Have a proper critique with them, using VTS to make sure they learned what you tried to teach them.
Teacher Reflection
The only problem I can think of would pertain to light leaks in the camera, or bad weather.
Feedback Activities
Ask the teacher that you collaborate with how your organization was and what kind of thinks you could improve.
Skills Development
The students will learn how to create a unique aesthetic using the pinhole process. They will also have the ability to make a pinhole out of a variety of containers.
Key Knowledge and Applications
The man goal for this project is to teach the students how photography was invented, so that they can have that knowledge with them as they go through life. In addition, they should really be able to understand the process well, and know how to create a pinhole out of almost any container that you can make light safe.
Materials
The students will need silver paper, an oatmeal canister, black tape, a rubber band, black photo paper, black paint, a exact-o knife, scissors, a pop can, a number 7 needle, and some good weather.
